Innovation drives the best business models. Innovation drives the best marketing. If you can innovate you naturally differentiate. If you differentiate you create your own unique, niche markets. Customers chase you so you don’t have to chase them. Facebook, Apple, Google, and Tesla are all on this bandwagon. Yet, the word bandwagon does not do this justice. Perhaps paradigm shift or wave is better. It’s a game changer they’ve created.
Facebook has a big and bold mission, as they called it: to connect the world with a solar powered airplane. Yes, you heard me right. Facebook is building a solar powered airplane that has engines, a wingspan bigger than a commercial airliner, and weighs less than a car. Impressive. Innovative. Imaginative. Bold. Brilliant, as noted in the video below:
Google and Apple are doing this with autonomous automobiles. Tesla is doing this with space rockets, cars, and home battery powered systems. It’s a leapfrog jump from one product category to another, and then back again. And yet, there is one common denominator: the internet. It connects, drives, and powers the spread of this innovation. Innovation creates products and products then create innovation.
In the case of Facebook, they’ve gone from the social sphere to the stratosphere. The boldness of this innovation takes their business model to a whole new level. I love this innovative approach. Since not all people have internet access, Facebook brings the internet to them. Talk about the advertising concept of reach! Talk about “reaching out and touching someone.” It’s not just the concept of reach–it’s literal reach.
What do we do with our business models to innovate? Is the sky the limit for us? Are we really thinking outside of the box? I hope so.
This really has me thinking…
