Kids Are Like Products
I have three kids. They are each different and unique, yet they all go through consistent stages in their lives. For example, the needs of my infant son were as different as day and night from those of my daughter. He was hungry all the time! And when he would try to get my attention to let me know he was hungry…well, let’s just say half the state of California heard him screaming for food. Plus, it seemed like he didn’t sleep the first five years of his hungry life! I was a tired father.
My oldest daughter, on the other hand, started sleeping through the night just two weeks after she was born. When she was hungry, she expressed it with a soft whimper rather than the earth-shattering screams of her brother. If they were different as young children, they are even more different from each other as young adults.
Products are just like kids. They have a life-cycle or a series of stages to go through as they grow up. Different strategies and actions are required to match a given stage. And so it is with managing a small business product or service. Specific actions at specific stages are required to generate maximum growth.
