The Apple Watch. It’s here. What is it? Is it a person?
This is not a trick or a play on words. Yes, the Apple Watch is a watch but in name and function only. It goes way beyond the concept of time. In fact, it redefines the concept of a watch. And you could say “times are indeed changing.” This is a paradigm shift that moves what we wear on our wrist and uploads it to our lives, lifestyles, minds, and hearts. The internet used to be small enough in a smartphone. Now the watch is like DNA: all the codes are in that one, little device. It’s all there, or least it’s moving there–or is it?
Think of the airplane. We say, “Oh, that’s an airplane.” But is it? What type of airplane? A Piper Cub is a different flying animal than the F-22 Raptor. Both are airplanes that defy gravity and get you from point A to point B, however exactly how they do that and what they do in the process is a whole, different, world. The Cub is simple, efficient, effective and works. Mind you, it’s slow and has limitations like its altitude ceiling and range, but in principle it gets you off the ground safely. In contrast, the F-22 is a supersonic speed demon that defies both radar and enemies. It also carries weapons for both air to air and air to ground. It flies but boy, does, it fly! By the time it arrives it’s gone and you never knew what hit you, your enemy, or air show.
Back to the Apple watch. It looks like a watch but it’s not a watch. Below is what it is, at least for now:
- The world in a watch because the internet is in the watch.
- Information in a watch. Live, real-time, video, and more.
- A phone. You call, talk, text, locate.
- One touch email.
- A GPS device. “Do you know where your kids are?” Your granny, your dog, your spouse and significant other.
- A status symbol.
- A health monitor for heartbeat, exercise, and more. Just wait as the aps come forth for all things medical and monitoring.
- A storage device.
- A friend and pal of your iPhone.
- A Wifi device.
- A biometric device.
- An accelerometer.
- A flashlight, of course.
- A wallet.
- A credit card.
- A companion to your iPhone 5 or 6.
- A Dick Tracy cool device.
- A statement.
- A status symbol.
- A paradigm shift.
- An evolving product in the wearable category.
- A product that give permission to the marketing to say, “Ok, wearables are to stay so let see where they go!”
- It’s personal.
- And more…
What do you mean, personal? Well, read what Apple says:
“Apple Watch represents a new chapter in the relationship people have with technology. It’s the most personal product we’ve ever made, because it’s the first one designed to be worn.”
So, is it still a watch? Will it one day drive your Apple Car, fly your Piper Cub, and cruise the F-22? However, in one sense Apple is saying the watch has a personality, a connection, a place in the human touch aspect of life. Hmmm. A watch that we don’t just wear but one that becomes a part of us. We don’t just use the Apple Watch, we wear it. It’s closer to the human interaction between technology and personage. It’s a device that spans the relationship aspect of the human technological device connection. A “pet” rock. No. A “pet watch. No. It’s more than that now. Time is going on a different journey now.
You decide. You wear. You watch…
