Never underestimate the power of a pageview. Website visits and pageviews work together. You have roughly eight seconds to capture the attention of a home page visitor. If you don’t capture that attention in eight to ten seconds, they may leave. They may never come back. Gone. Off to another website that will earn both their attention and the objective of their search. How to capture & attract longer site visits is important to your small business. Making a website visit count is the handshake that may lead to a friendship, a follow, a share, a referral, and the long-term customer engagement that retains customers, clients, readers, and content fans.
A website visit is both an art and a science. The new, unique visitor may find you by accident or by organic search intent. Make sure it’s an experience they remember. Make sure like a bear to honey they return to the site of the joy, value, and benefits. And, make sure the first experience leads to more and more visits to your thoughts and value-oriented content.

Below are some tips to help turn visits into value:
- Get to the point quickly and simply. Leave no room for confusion with the first 100 words of your website. Who are you and what can your business do for that visitor?
- Clearly explain your value proposition. Is their time worth what you offer? Make the eight seconds count before they leave–or stick around.
- Amazing design, colors, and music are not important. What you can do the for the visitor is. It’s about them not you. I see way too many small businesses get caught up in how the site looks rather than how is communicates benefits. Offer solutions not an art gallery.
- Make sure you simply and clearly communicate what benefits your offer in 3 to 5 bullet points. A short paragraph and then the benefits.
- Your website must include a mobile and tablet-friendly, responsive design that auto-detects a PC, mobile, or tablet visitor and then adjusts to optimize their usability experience. If you site is not mobile-friendly, it’s not friendly. Mobile search is exploding. Get current.
- Don’t pitch. Offer value and benefits that a ten year old can understand. Visitors are smart but make it simple so there’s no room for confusion.
Pause, look at your watch and count the eight seconds. Make them count for them and not you…
